Barium tests for the assessment of symptoms, like heart burn, abdominal pain and bloating, related to oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. They are also used for screening for early detection of cancer of the bowel. These tests are now carried out using digital technology which allows for magnification and reverse polarity imaging which enhance detail.

IVP examination involves the use of dye to assess the function and structure of the kidneys, ureters and bladder.

Dye studies are useful also for the investigation of the salivary glands and leg veins for thrombosis and varicose vein formation.
