Bone Density Scan

Osteoporosis screening (brittle bone disease) is a condition where there is loss of bone density (thickness). As we get older this occurs as a natural process, our bones become thinner because new bone is not being replaced as quickly as old bone is lost.

One woman in three and one man in twelve in Malta is affected by this disease. This means that in old age a simple fall can result in a major fracture. Half of all women will experience a fracture by the time they are 70 years old. Osteoporosis is a condition that can be prevented and treated in most diagnosed cases. Many people can be affected by this disease not only the elderly. Remember men are susceptible to this disease as well. A Bone Densitometer test is a simple non invasive test that is very accurate in assessing for low bone density and the results are recorded and printed for comparison with the subsequent scans.
